Broccoli Kills Cancer Culprits

An exciting new study in a recent issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Science reports that broccoli and broccoli sprouts contain a phytochemical that kills the bacteria responsible for most stomach ulcers and stomach cancer. Laboratory tests demonstrated that the phytochemical, sulforaphane killed helicobacter pylori, a bacteria that causes stomach ulcers and often deadly stomach cancers.

This is great news, especially since the levels of sulforaphane tested were similar in size to that found in an optimal serving of cruciferous vegetables. Additionally, eating cruciferous vegetables is a lot more reasonable than taking antibiotics, which are usually prescribed to fight these nasty bacteria. For one, antibiotics are costly, and often scarce in many parts of the world. Secondly, antibiotics don't always work, as some strains are resistant to commonly used antibiotics. However, this study showed that sulforaphane even killed helicobacter that was resistant to antibiotic therapy. These two facts alone could have significant public health implications all around the globe.

Unfortunately, only a small percentage of people consume the 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables daily recommended for optimal health. Cruciferous vegetables tend to be the least consumed, as many people find vegetables like broccoli less than pleasant to eat. Even former President Bush wasn't shy about declaring his distaste for this bushy vegetable, much to delight of American children. But if you don't regularly consume health-giving cruciferous vegetables, what can you do to make sure you get the phytonutrients your body needs?
